Sodium bisulfite (sodium hydrogen sulfite) commonly used as a reducing agent in the chemical industry because it reacts with oxygen that has been dissolved. It is used in heavy industry as a corrosion inhibitor that wards off oxidation in massive piping systems. It is also used in wastewater treatment facilities when paired with chlorine. Is sometimes used in the petro industry to ward off rust and corrosion in piping associated with petroleum and oilfield applications where exposure to water and brine can cause corrosion issues. It was once used as a food additive to keep produce fresh by acting as a biocide (which is the same way it acts as a corrosion inhibitor in pipe applications) but due to allergic reactions that caused fatalities, it has since been banned by the FDA for such uses. It is also banned for associated uses in many countries outside the United States.
