Sodium laureth sulfate is a rather inexpensive foaming agent that acts a surfactant, demulsifier and has cleansing properties. Some drilling companies use it as a foaming agent in oil well drilling applications as it helps prevent emulsions from forming downhole in drilling fluid & mud applications. It’s commonly added to many shampoos, cosmetics and soaps due to its foaming properties. There has been some controversy over its inclusion in consumer products due to its mild toxicity which causes skin irritation in some individuals. That being said, some grades of it are still cleared for use in these applications and products as long as concentrations are kept at a minimum. These foaming properties (paired with it being inexpensive) has often lead to it being used as a low-cost defoamer in hydrocarbon drilling applications such as air drilling and other downhole applications.
