Toluene is a common component in paint thinners and gives paint thinners their characteristic smell and unique odor qualities. It’s commonly used as a solvent in multiple applications and is a common component (additive) in gasoline.  It is commonly used to create benzene and xylene. It’s uses as a solvent includes paints and paint thinners, silicone sealants, rubbers, inks, adhesive glues, lacquers, leather tanners and conditioners as well as disinfectants. It occurs naturally in various forms of heavy crude oil and can be extracted from it. Because of this, it is commonly used as a fuel additive because it serves as an octane booster in race cars (similar to xylene). It’s also often used as a component of jet fuel. Another use for it is a precursor to making benzoic acid.
