Sulfuric acid (also known as sulphuric acid  and historically as oil of vitriol) is a water soluble acid that is highly corrosive. It’s highly corrosive properties not only make it hazardous to living tissues but also to metals and even stone. It’s has a myriad of uses including functioning as an electrolyte in lead-acid car batteries, being the active ingredient in household drain cleaners. In industrial applications, in can be used in oil refining, water processing and chemical synthesis. It can be used in hydrocarbon drilling applications, but it is not as popular of a choice as hcl but is still used in by the refineries as a synthetic detergent that can rid fuels and gasolines of impurity. It’s often a component of fertilizers and is used to my rayon through a chemical process. The crystal build up on the negative electrodes of car batteries is a result of sulfation of this sulfuric acid.
